The Tall Ship

The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour.

SV Glenlee was built in 1896 at Port Glasgow and is one of only five Clyde-built sailing ships still afloat. She is now berthed at Glasgow Harbour and visitors can explore both the ship and the visitor centre, which is housed in the former Queen's Dock's hydraulic pumping station (now known as the Pumphouse) on the right.

The Glenlee started her working life as a bulk carrier. She circumnavigated the globe four times and rounded Cape Horn fifteen times. She was purchased by the Spanish Navy in 1922, renamed the Galatea and modified for use as a sail training vessel. In 1969 she was laid up in Seville Harbour and remained there until 1992 when the Clyde Maritime Trust bought her at auction.

In 1993 the Glenlee was towed back to the Clyde and restoration work began. She was opened to the public in 1999 but restoration work continues in 2003, often carried out by local volunteers.
