Evening Dress c 1926

A sleeveless apple-green silk crepe evening dress c 1926 stocked by Murielle's of Sauchiehall Street.

Many of the evening dresses stocked by Murielle's in the 1920s were beautifully embellished with beadwork and embroidery, having come directly from Paris. In 1926 the magazine Scottish Field noted that "never have such dance frocks been so seductive. The straight slim bodices, slim hips and then the swirl of soft material which hangs around the knees and sways with the body as it tangos and foxtrots..."

The scooped neckline and armhole edges of this dress are embroidered with a single row of tiny silver-coloured beads and a double row of diamante. Matching beads are used in the embroidered design around the lower bodice. The dress has the dropped waistline typical of the 1920s. The skirt is composed of two layers. The underskirt is permanently pleated and falls straight to the hem which is edged with silver-coloured bugle beads. The overskirt is gathered to the waistline and is made from six pear-shaped panels embroidered with silver-coloured beads and diamante. The panels are bordered with a double row of glass beads and the lower edge is fringed.
