A portrait of James Copeland taken in 1857 by Duncan Brown.

Copeland was appointed as a master at the Glasgow Government School of Art in April 1854. He taught mechanical and architectural drawing from 8pm to 10pm three nights a week, for which he was paida salary of £25. He left the School of Art in 1855.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was janitor at the School of Art from 1845 to 1862. He was also a talented amateur photographer whose work documented aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
