Napier's Foremen, 1858

Foremen at Robert Napier & Sons' Govan New shipyard, 1858, photographed by Duncan Brown on the day of the launch of the steamship Douglas.

Some of the foremen employed at Napier in the 1840s and 1850s went on to establish their own shipyards and marine engineering businesses. For example, Charles Randolph and John Elder established Randolph, Elder & Co as a marine engineering business in 1852 and acquired the Govan Old shipyard (formerly occupied by Napier) in 1860. Other ex-Napier employees included James and George Thomson, who founded J & G Thomson in 1846, and Peter Denny who later became the senior partner at William Denny & Bros.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
