Crookston Castle, 1856

A view of the tower at Crookston Castle in 1856 taken by Duncan Brown.

Shortly before this photograph was taken the castle's owner, Sir John Maxwell, had the only remaining tower reinforced by metal tie-bars. He also had removed all the stones and debris which lay around the ruins of the castle.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
