Calton notables

"Calton notables", photographed by Chief Sanitary Inspector Peter Fyfe c 1916.

This group photograph shows some of the people who lived and worked in the Calton area at the turn of the 20th century. An older man on the right is smoking a traditional clay pipe. The younger men in the back row (slightly left of centre) are smoking cigarettes, which began to gain popularity in Britain during the 1880s and reached a mass market at the beginning of the 20th century. The woman with the big basket of laundry is probably on her way to the wash-house at Glasgow Green.
