Burrell Courtyard

The courtyard at the Burrell Collection.

The Burrell Collection is housed in an award-winning building designed by Barry Gasson, John Meunier and Brit Andreson. This spacious, light-filled courtyard houses sculptures by Rodin (including the Thinker) and the Warwick Vase. The Vase dates to the 2nd century AD and was unearthed by Gavin Hamilton in the 1770s at Tivoli near Rome. Hamilton, a graduate of the University of Glasgow, was a well-know artist and antiquarian who lived in Rome. The vase was brought back to Britain by the Earl of Warwick in the late 18th century.

Napoleon Bonaparte is reported to have said that if he had conquered Britain the first thing he would have demanded would have been the Warwick Vase. The vase was purchased for the Burrell Collection in 1977.
