Anchor-Donaldson Line

An Anchor-Donaldson Line poster advertising voyages to Canada, 1928. The passengers in the foreground may be emigrants embarking on a new life across the Atlantic, or simply tourists with a vast amount of luggage!

The Glasgow shipping companies Anchor Line (Henderson Brothers) and the Donaldson Line both operated services to Canada. In 1916 they agreed to share these routes and form a joint company, Anchor-Donaldson, to operate the servicess. Four Donaldson ships, the Letitia, Saturnia, Cassandra and Athenia, were transferred to the new shipping line. Anchor-Donaldson survived until 1935, when the liquidation of Anchor Line (Henderson Brothers) resulted in the termination of the joint venture and Donaldsons formed the Donaldson Atlantic Line.
