Andrew Bradley

Cartoon and poem to Andrew Cecil Bradley (1851-1935), in Glasgow University Magazine 22 February 1899.

In 1869 Bradley entered Balliol College, Oxford, as a classical exhibitioner and in 1874 was elected to a fellowship. The following year he was appointed a lecturer, at first in English and then, until 1881, in philosophy. In 1882 he became the first occupant of the chair of literature and history at University College, Liverpool. In 1890 he was appointed Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow.

Bradley remained in Glasgow for eleven years until he was elected to the professorship of poetry at Oxford. While at Oxford he wrote Shakespearean Tragedy, which is recognised as a classic of modern Shakespeare criticism. When he died, unmarried, in London he was the pre-eminent Shakespearean scholar of his generation.
