Prof Edward Caird

Edward Caird (1835-1908) was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, 1866-1893.

Born in Greenock, Caird was the younger brother of John (1820-1898) the Principal of the University of Glasgow. Educated at Balliol before taking the Glasgow chair, he became active in politics and played a leading role in establishing political science as a subject for study at the University. He returned to Oxford in 1893 as Master of Balliol College (until 1907).

Caird was a founding fellow of the British Academy and a corresponding member of the French Academy.
