Home Sweet Home

GUL, Sp Coll, Northern Looking Glass

Home Sweet Home

Coloured cartoon from the Glasgow Looking Glass of 25 June 1825 showing the second in the series "Domestic Intelligence", entitled "Home Sweet Home".

The cartoon shows a chaotic domestic scene, with childern fighting amidst overturned furniture and broken crockery. The head of the household looks on sheepishly as his wife berates him. A sign in the window reads "To remove Whitsunday".

Tenants usually rented their tenement flats under one-year agreements which expired each Whitsunday unless the tenant and landlord had come to a prior agreement to renew, and the tenant signed a missive to that effect.
