Balgrayhill Redevelopment

Bailie James McLean cuts the tape to at the official opening of the Ballgrayhill improvements, assisted by Maureen Corner and Springburn-born personality Jimmie MacGregor. A large photograph of the old Balgrayhill was set against the backdrop of the newly completed work. The picture appeared in the April 1992 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

This was the first phase of a £21 million regeneration programme for the area. Radical improvements were carried out to 260 houses, transforming the previous unbroken 600 metre long "snakeblocks" into separate buildings complete with central staircase and communal gardens.

In the 1960s, Robin Hall and Jimmie MacGregor were among Britain's best known folk musicians, thanks to their regular appearances on the BBC television magazine programme Tonight. After they split in 1981, MacGregor enjoyed a successful career in broadcasting with shows that included On The West Highland Way, MacGregor’s Gathering and Macgregor Across Scotland.
