Billy McNeill

Former Celtic footballer Billy McNeill with comedian Eddie Devine, Councillor Colin McNicol and pupils of Windlaw Primary School in Castlemilk at the launch of the Junior Great Scottish Fun Run. The photograph appeared in the May 1992 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin. This was the first of more than 100 schools to be visited.

Billy McNeill was centre-half and captain of Celtic during the most successful period in the club's history, in a playing career which lasted from 1957 to 1975. Under manager Jock Stein, McNeill led the team to nine successive Scottish League Championships and seven Scottish Cup wins. The highlight of his career came in Lisbon in 1967, when he became the first British player to lift the European Cup after Celtic's 2-1 victory in the final over Inter Milan. He also won twenty-nine caps for Scotland and captained the national team. He managed several clubs, including Celtic, after retiring from playing. He was awarded an MBE in 1976.
