A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of the Very Reverend Duncan Macfarlane (1771-1857). The painting was by John Graham-Gilbert.

Macfarlane was born in Auchingray and became minister of Drymen. He was presented to Glasgow Cathedral by King George IV in 1823, remaining as the minister for thirty-three years), and became Principal of the University of Glasgow at the same time, holding that office until 1858. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1819 and 1843 and was a leading member of the moderate wing of the church at the time of the Disruption.
