A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of William Johnston of Glenochard (1806-1864). The painting was by Sir Daniel Macnee.

Johnston was one of Glasgow's most powerful businessmen during the mid-19th century. He was an accountant who was a manager of the Commercial Bank and Chairman of the Caledonian Railway Co from 1854 until 1859. In 1859 he became a trustee for the second William Dixon's large industrial estates at Govanhill and Calder, and took a leading role in managing the coal and iron founding businesses under William S Dixon during the early 1860s.
