Kilbirnie Street Fire

The Glasgow Fire Service tackling the Kilbirnie Street Fire in August 1972 as three policemen look on. A hydraulic platform and two turntable ladders fight the blaze, which was attended by sixty men and twelve fire appliances.

Seven firemen died while fighting the Kilbirnie Street blaze after one was trapped inside the building and six of his colleagues attempted to rescue him.

The fire was thought to have been caused by a flourescent light bulb which exploded causing a small fire. The owner, Mr Sher, and two workmen tried to extinguish the flames but were unsuccessful and called the Fire Service.
