Advertisements from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1883-1884 for the coach builder Peter Holmes, the second hand clothes dealers Mr and Mrs Alfred Jay and James Riddell, accountant and house factor.

The trade in second hand clothing grew rapidly in Glasgow during the early 19th century, primarily in the area around the foot of the Saltmarket. Most of the clothes were exported to Ireland and the prevalence of Irish dealers gave rise to the nickname "Paddy's Market." The Jays also dealt in old jewellery and bric a brac.
