Foulis Academy Exhibition

This engraving by David Allan is a unique record of the exhibitions of the Foulis Academy's painting in the inner court of the University of Glasgow. On the wall on the right in the foreground is a tribute to Raphael's Transfiguration and the picture hung on the tower follows Rubens' Daniel in the Lions' Den, the original of which was at Hamilton Palace.

The Foulis Academy held exhibitions in the inner court until the school's closure in 1775. The impact of these shows on the public is hard to assess due to a lack of newspapers and other contemporary sources which might have provided reviews and comment.
