Bird and Dog

Television personality Jackie Bird and Lord Provost James Shields, pictured in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin with one of the inmates at the opening of the rebuilt Glasgow Dog and Cat Home in Cardonald in 1994.

The original Glasgow Dog and Cat Home was opened in nearby Craigton Hall in 1893. It is now run by the SSPCA to provide accommodation for stray animals, not just dogs and cats, until they are either reclaimed by their owners or found new homes. School parties are welcomed, to give children the opportunity to learn about animal welfare and handling pets, and there is a pet rescue service.

Journalist and broadcaster Jackie Bird regularly presents Reporting Scotland, BBC Scotland's nightly news programme, as well as other BBC Scotland TV and radio programmes. She has also been known to sing at Hogmanay.
