Building Control

Building Control staff at work filling in old mine workings on the north side of Albert Avenue in Queen's Park, photographed for the July 1994 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

Many areas of Glasgow were built above old and forgotten shallow mine workings and subsidence has resulted in the demolition of many old tenements. The location and consolidation of these workings, undertaken by geotechnical specialists, is necessary for the protection of buildings and is one of the tasks undertaken by the city's Building Control department. Building Control is also responsible for the enforcement of building regulations and standards, involving the processing of thousands of applications each year ranging from domestic alterations to development of office blocks and shopping centres, and for the licensing and supervision of demolition.

The dramatic improvement in the appearance of Victorian tenements after stone cleaning can be seen in the photograph, by comparing the facade on the left with that of the stone-cleaned properties in the background.
