Bishop Wishart

Elspeth King, Curator of the People's Palace and her assistant Michael Donnelly pictured in the December 1989 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, working on an effigy of Bishop Robert Wishart. It was created by museum staff for the Early Glasgow room in the People's Palace.

Robert Wishart became Bishop of Glasgow in 1272 and remained for forty-four years. After the subjugation of Scotland by England's King Edward I, he became one of the leading statesmen to support William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in the wars of independence. His tomb is in Glasgow Cathedral.

Elspeth King worked as Curator of the People's Palace, with responsibility for developing the social history collections for the city, from 1974 to 1991. She was credited with transforming the museum, which had been under threat of demolition, into one of Scotland's top attractions. Annual visitor figures soared from tens of thousands to half a million by the 1990s.
