Pettigrew & Stephens Sale, 1933

Ladies' shoes illustrated in a sale catalogue issued by Pettigrew & Stephens in January 1933.

The manufacture of boots and shoes was one of Glasgow's major industries, but new production and selling methods had brought about a serious decline by the 1930s. In the 1890s, 90 per cent of the leather footwear worn in Scotland was made in the country. By 1937, this proportion had shrunk to 10 per cent. The major producer in Glasgow at this time was the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society's factory at Shieldhall.
