Allan's "Popular" ejector gun made by Arthur Allan, 3 West Nile Street, illustrated in the firm's trade catalogue c 1925. Shooting was a popular pastime with the upper classes and the highlight of the year for many was the "Glorious Twelfth", the opening of the grouse shooting season on 12 August.
When the catalogue was issued the firm had been established for over seventy years, as merchants and manufacturers of guns and fishing tackle. Allan claimed to have the largest stock of guns and fishing tackle in Scotland and provided a repairs service with "skilled workmen always on the premises."
