Empire Exhibition

Southern Rhodesia and East Africa shared a pavilion at the Empire Exhibition. The interior of the Southern Rhodesian section is illustrated here. In addition to the decapitated wildlife, tobacco and minerals featured prominently in the display of the country's products. In the background is the entrance to the Victoria Falls attraction.

Despite the imposition of a separate admission fee, the reconstruction of the Victoria Falls proved to be one of the most popular attractions of the Exhibition. The model was 120 feet long and 14 feet deep. 25,000 gallons of water a minute cascaded over the edge and loudspeakers magnified the roar of the River Zambezi. A model train regularly crossed a bridge below the falls, passing through the rain forest. Ever changing coloured lights provided a vivid reconstruction of the falls at various times of the day, in a five minute cycle.
