Empire Exhibition

One of the mannequin parades in the Fashion Theatre in the Women of Empire Pavilion at the 1938 Empire Exhibition. The Fashion Theatre, which accommodated 400 people, held shows four times per day, with models displaying the best British designs made with the best British fabrics.

Designed by Margaret Brodie, the Women of the Empire Pavilion consisted of a fashion theatre, a reception room and a tea room, in keeping with the emphasis throughout the pavilion on interior decoration, fashion and handicrafts.

There was an exhibition of historical fashions in a room behind the theatre which displayed clothes from the time of George III to the 1930s. Queen Elizabeth is said to have particularly enjoyed her visit to the Women's Pavilion. Her keen interest in domestic matters was reported to have caused "great satisfaction" among those displaying their skills for the visitors.
