Citizens' Theatre

In the 1960s the Citizens' Theatre seemed to be in a downward spiral of declining standards and income. In 1969 the appointment of Giles Havergal as artistic director breathed new life into the theatre. Innovative productions, often controversial, combined with a policy of low ticket prices brought impressive audience figures and financial stability.

This illustrated poster for the autumn 1975 season shows that the theatre was no longer relying primarily on Scottish material for its productions but was prepared to stage worthwhile plays from any source. Stars who have been attracted to the Citizens' in recent years include Pierce Brosnan, Glenda Jackson and Alan Rickman. At the beginning of the 21st century the Citizens' Theatre continues to provide varied drama, along with a Christmas pantomime.
