Marcus Dods

Professor Marcus Dods (1834-1909) was a Free Church minister.

Son of a Presbyterian minister at Belford, Northumberland, Dods was educated at the University of Edinburgh and ordained as minister at Renfield Free Church in 1864. A prominent Free Church intellectual, Dodds caused controversy in 1877 with a published sermon on the theory of inspiration. He also published numerous books, including Life of Augustine and Mahomet, Buddha, and Christ along with several Bible commentaries.

Dods left Glasgow in 1889 when he was appointed professor of New Testament criticism at New College, Edinburgh. He became Principal there in 1907.
