Peter Beattie

Peter Beattie (1821-1911) was Inspector of Poor of the Barony Parish.

Born in Edinburgh, Beattie spent the early years of his career in poor relief administration in his native city. In 1857 he was appointed Inspector of the Poor of the Barony Parish, a post he held for twenty-eight years. During his time with the largest parish in Scotland he established a reputation as an authority on parochial administration. Many aspects of the law were left unclear by the Poor Law Act of 1845 and Beattie was a regular attender at the Court of Session concerning disputes on the law of settlement, with his interpretation frequently being upheld by judges.

Beattie promoted the Barony Parochial Board Bill of 1862 which abolished the system of mandates in elections to the Parochial Board. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the asylum at Woodilea.
