James Roberton

Sir James Roberton (1821-1889) was a lawyer and Professor of Law at The University of Glasgow.

Roberton first came to prominence when he became a partner in the firm of Towers-Clark, Roberton & Ross. His capacity for hard work and phenomenal memory led to his being regarded as an authority on common and statute law, particularly in the area of conveyancing. He took a keen interest in legal education and was appointed to the chair of the Law Faculty at the University in 1867. Professor Roberton was viewed as a reliable source of advice by many of his fellow professionals. At the time of his death in 1889 he was Dean of the Faculty of Procurators of Glasgow.
