A stained glass window The Teacher by Stephen Adam, c 1878. It is one of twenty windows designed for Maryhill Burgh Halls illustrating various trades and professions in the burgh. The windows are now part of the People's Palace collections.
In 1872 the Education (Scotland) Act made it compulsory for all children aged between 6 and 12 years to go to school. In 1873 Maryhill School Board was established and Maryhill Public School opened. The school was created by amalgamating the existing Parish and Free Church schools in the burgh.
