John Burt

John Burt (d 1891) was a tanner and leather merchant and a town councillor.

Nicknamed “the East End Radical” by The Bailie, Burt was a radical Liberal and a fiery temperance campaigner. He served as a town councillor, 1861-1870, and after losing an election to James Steel, a fierce critic of the temperance radical group on the council, Burt was re-elected in 1873 and served for a further six years. He was a president of the Reform Club, and a founder of the Cobden Club.

Burt was the proprietor of the Pleasance Leather Works in Bridgeton.
