Scotland Street Public School

A design detail from Scotland Street Public School.

Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), the school was built 1904-1906 for the Govan School Board. Mackintosh had running arguments with the Board, which wanted a standard school design which could be completed within the budget and feared that his desire to introduce many of his trademark design features would result in greater costs. Mackintosh won many of the arguments over the design, but the project was completed for a sum that exceeded the budget by 25 per cent.

The building is now the Scotland Street School Museum and is operated by Glasgow City Council.
