Hampden Park

An aerial photograph of Hampden Park and the surrounding area in Mount Florida, July 1994. Hampden is Scotland’s national football stadium and the home of Queen’s Park FC. Lesser Hampden Park is on the left of the picture. It was built on farmland in 1925 and the farmhouse was converted by Queen's Park to serve as a clubhouse.

Even before new safety regulations were introduced in the 1980s it had been recognised that Hampden Park required upgrading. In 1990 the National Stadium Committee was formed to drive developments forward. The first phase of the upgrading work was finished in February 1994 at a cost of £12 million, and involved landscaping, improved car parking and the provision of hospitality lounges. The second phase, costing £59 million pounds, was completed in 1999.

A vast new hypermarket has now been built on the waste ground at the top right of the photograph, on the corner of Prospecthill and Aikenhead Roads.
