Delays to trams

A cartoon advising patience when travelling by tram, from Tramway Car Sketches by J N, 1889.

J N's cartoons illustrate some of the frustrations of travelling by tram. In the top illustration, a delivery cart's axle has broken. Passengers bound for Partick have to wait until it is unloaded and can be removed from the tram tracks. Below, the tram to Crosshill has taken a wrong turning because the points were not set correctly. The tram is being pushed back up the track, and the points will have to be re-set so that it can proceed in its intended direction.

In 1894 the Glasgow Tramway and Omnibus Co's lease on the tramways expired, and the town council assumed responsibility for the city's tram services. Horse trams were replaced by electric at the turn of the century.
