Monkland Motorway

A construction worker in the drainage system of the new Monkland Motorway section of the M8 on 3 October 1978.

The Monkland Motorway was built along the course of the old Monkland Canal, to link the north and west flanks of Glasgow's Inner Ring Road with the A8 and the M73 and M74 in the east. This stretch of the M8 was completed from Townhead to Cumbernauld Road (and a junction with the A80) in 1975, to Stepps Road in 1979 and to the Baillieston Interchange in 1980.
