A portrait of Dr David Livingstone (1813-1873), held by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. This work was created by painting over an enlargement of a photograph taken by Thomas Annan in 1864.
David Livingstone was born in Blantyre and studied at Anderson's College of Medicine before going to London where he was ordained a Congregational minister. He was admitted to the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow in 1840.
Having initially intended to work as a missionary in China, Livingstone travelled instead to southern Africa in 1840. This marked the beginning of his well-documented life as a missionary and explorer on that continent.
