Personalities

Molly Weir

By Priscilla Barlow

Molly Weir was born in Springburn in 1920. Although only five feet tall, her red hair, personality and talent singled her out. While at secretarial college she joined the amateur dramatic Pantheon Club. Success in the Carroll Levis Discoveries Show prompted her to turn professional and she moved into regular broadcasting. Her first breakthrough came in 1947 when she was cast as Tattie McIntosh in the long-running Tommy Handley series, Itma.

She moved permanently to London in 1949 with her husband, Sandy Hamilton. On radio she appeared in the panel game show, One of the Family, on Children's Hour, and in the Helen W Pryde series, The McFlannels. Molly Weir achieved wider national recognition as "Aggie" in the popular radio show, Life with the Lyons. She made her debut in West End theatre at The Globe with A E Matthews and then joined the cast of The Happiest Days of Your Life at The Apollo.

Increasingly her career concentrated on film and television. Films include What a Whopper, The Happiest Days of Your Life, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and Scrooge. By the 1970s she was appearing regularly on television. A long list of engagements included comedy series, Oh Brother, This is your Life with Eamonn Andrews, and several plays including Beneath the Wee Red Lums. One of her last appearances before retirement was in the 1996 Scottish Television production Flowers of the Forest. Throughout her working life Molly Weir was also an accomplished speaker and author.
