A portrait by Sir Daniel Macnee of James Watson (1787-1871), President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1838-1841, 1849-1852 and 1857-1860. Watson was known as "The Father of the Faculty."

Educated at Glasgow Grammar School and the University of Glasgow, Watson originally intended a career in the church. He turned to medicine and became a member of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in 1810. In 1812 and 1813 he was a visiting surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary but returned to the University to pursue his interest in medicine rather than surgery. He graduate MD in 1828 and was a visiting physician at the Royal in 1842-1845 and 1856-1860. He was also served as a visiting physician at the Fever Hospital in Clyde Street during the 1840s.
