Children in Queen's Park

Two children in the Queen's Park, photographed by Duncan Brown in the 1880s or 1890s.

The boy is holding a gird and cleek, a favourite toy of the period. It consists of an iron hoop, or cleek, of about 3 feet in diameter, which was driven along using a straight metal rod (the cleek) to guide it. The game sounds quite simple but (as anyone who has tried it will know) there is a definite knack to it!

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
