Waiting for the Minstrels

Holidaymakers "waiting for the minstrels" on the beach at Saltcoats in 1914. The beach contains a cross-section of people, young and old, who have made the trip "doon the watter" for a holiday or on an excursion for the day.

Minstrel shows were popular forms of entertainment in Glasgow and at the Clyde seaside resorts. The minstrels often blacked their faces with burnt cork and performed songs, dances, and comic repartee in a the style of (and often as parodies of) American black performers.
