Golfhill House

Golfhill House in Dennistoun, photographed in 1870 by Thomas Annan.

In 1756, Golfhill and other parts of the Wester Craigs lands were purchased by the merchant John Anderson and transferred to his brother Jonathan. James Dennistoun (1758-1835) acquired the property in 1802 from Anderson's trustees and built Golfhill House.

Dennistoun had established J & A Dennistoun with his brother Alexander and they traded around the world. He was manager of the Glasgow Banking Co, formed in 1809.

Dennistoun's son Alexander (1790-1874) inherited Golfhill. He added the adjoining estates of Whitehill and Craigpark to Golfhill and in the 1850s began to lay out the housing estate he named "Dennistoun". Charles Rennie Mackintosh was raised there, and his father is said to have tended an allotment in the grounds of Golfhill House. The mansion was demolished in the 1920s but its name survives in Golfhill Drive.
