Molendinar Ravine

Molendinar Ravine

An undated engraving by Robert Paul showing Glasgow Cathedral from the north. It is presumably an early example of his work (mid-1750s?)as he describes himself as an eleve (pupil) at the foot of the engraving.

The prebendal gardens can be seen to the north of the cathedral, on the right, and the Molendinar Ravine to the east, in the centre. It is said that members of the local volunteers practised rifle shooting from the Fir Park across the ravine. The hillside had been planted with fir trees by Adam Montgomery in 1715-1716. The Knox Monument was erected on the hill in 1825 and the Necroplis was laid out there during the 1830s.
