Partick Thistle, 2001-2002

Partick Thistle players and fans celebrate in Firhill Stadium following the presentation of the the First Division championship trophy in April 2002. In the background is the Jackie Husband stand, named after one of Thistle's stalwarts in the 1940s and opened in 1995. As in many Scottish football grounds, the stand was built in place of the former terracing, as a result of the Taylor Report on ground safety.

Winning the First Division championship, and promotion to the Scottish Premier League, completed a remarkable transformation in the fortunes of Partick Thistle. Relegated from the Premier League after a controversial play-off against Dundee United in 1996, Thistle ran into financial difficulties, and almost went out of business in 1997. The club dropped into the Second Division in 1998. It was only when John Lambie was appointed manager, for the third time in his career, that the tide turned. The Second Division was won in season 2000-2001, followed by the First Division in the next season, which also brought an appearance in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.
