Celtic pennant, 1967

A pennant issued on the occasion of Celtic's victory in the European Cup Final, 1967. Captain Billy McNeill is depicted holding the new trophy, whereas the cup illustrated at the bottom of the pennant is the old trophy competed for in earlier seasons.

The European Cup final of 1967 will long be remembered as the first occasion on which the trophy was won by a British team. Goals by Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers gave Celtic a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in Lisbon. Vast crowds turned out to greet the team on their return to Glasgow.

All the players in the European Cup winning team earned lasting fame among Celtic supporters, none more so than Jimmy Johnstone, who was voted Celtic's greatest-ever player in 2002. A major influence on Celtic's success was manager Jock Stein. Under his management, Celtic won nine successive league championships, from season 1965-1966 to 1973-1974.

Season 1966-1967 was the most successful in Celtic's history. Five trophies were won, the others being the Scottish League Championship, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup and Glasgow Cup.
