Theatre Royal

When the Theatre Royal was acquired by Scottish Television in 1957 the new owners left most of the interior intact. In 1974 STV moved to new studios and a successful fund raising campaign by Scottish Opera, under the direction of Gavin Boyd, enabled the building to be purchased as a permanent home for Scottish Opera.

The theatre was restored to a very high standard with the help of public funds, and it re-opened in 1975 with a gala performance of Die Fledermaus. It was acclaimed as one of the most impressive venues for opera in the country and has since hosted many successful seasons for Scottish Opera. Other productions such as ballet and drama are staged there.
