Ashton Lane

Dusk in Ashton Lane.

Ashton Lane is a narrow cobbled street behind Byres Road near the University of Glasgow, lined with Victorian stables, mews buildings and small workshops. The lane was once home to Barr & Stroud, the optical instrument makers that set up an assembly works at its southern end from 1899 until the firm moved to Anniesland in 1904.

Famous since 1971 as the location of the Ubiquitous Chip restaurant, an increasingly eclectic range of style bars and restaurants opened in Ashton Lane during the 1990s. By the beginning of the 21st century it was at the heart of the West End's vibrant social scene.
