Toryglen Prefabs

Councillors from Glasgow and Monklands visiting refurbished prefabs in Toryglen, photographed for the September 1982 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper, The Bulletin. Councillors from Airdrie and Coatbridge had asked for a guided tour of one of the houses, to see whether Glasgow's success in modernising prefabs could be repeated in Monklands.

Prefabricated bungalows such as the one illustrated were a familiar sight in many areas of Glasgow in the years following the Second World War, when traditional house building materials and skilled labour were both in short supply. They were intended to last for just ten years, but they proved so popular with tenants in areas like Toryglen that many councils opted to extend their life by renovating rather than demolishing them.
