William Motherwell

A Thomas Annan photograph of a bust of William Motherwell (1797-1835). The sculptor was James Fillans.

Motherwell was appointed sheriff-clerk depute in Paisley in 1819. He was also an an author, ballad-collector and the editor of books including Minstrelsy, Ancient and Modern (1827) and a volume of his poems entitled Narrative and Lyrical (1832).

He became editor of the Paisley Advertiser and Paisley Magazine before spending the last five years of his life as editor of the Glasgow Courier.
