Scottish National Exhibition, 1911

"A picturesque village group" is the caption on this postcard depicting a scene at the Highland Village at the Scottish Exhibition in 1911. Some of the model village's cottages were of the primitive type, with earthen floors and a peat fire in the middle. Others were a more modern two room variety. Despite the authentic appearance, the walls were made of canvas and plaster, painted over.

Everyday activities such as spinning and washing gave the appearance of normal life proceeding at the Highland Village. This impression was further enhanced by the presence of a cow, a Highland pony, sheep and even a (caged) wildcat.
